Definition

Adverb merupakan bentuk kata keterangan dalam bahasa inggris, adverbs juga merupakan bentuk kata yang dapat memodifikasi :

  • a Verb ( Kata Kerja )  (She ran slowly. — How did she run?)
  • an Adjective (She ran  very quick  — How did she run?)
  • another Adverb (He moved quite slowly down the village. — How slowly did he move?)

Sebagaimana yang akan kita lihat, adverbs sering menjelaskan when, where, why, or under tergantung situasi yang terjadi. Adverbs kebanyakan di akhiri dengan -ly; bagaimanapun, banyak kata dan phrase yang juga tidak diakhiri dengan –ly memilik fungsi sebagai Adverb dan akhiran -ly tidak menjamin bahwa kata itu adalah adverb. Ending is not a guarantee that a word is an adverb. Kata lovely, lonely, friendly,silly  dan sebagainya adalah adjective :

  • She is friendly girl (dia adalah gadis yang ramah).

Jika sekelompok kata mengandung  subject dan verb bertindak sebagai adverb (memodifikasi verb dalam sebuah kalimat) itu dinamakan Adverb Clause.

  • When this meeting is over, we are going to the zoo.

Tetapi ada jenis lain yang termasuk Adverbial Phrase:

  • She calls his father as often as posible.

Adverbs dapat memodifikasi Adjectives, tetapi adjective tidak bisa memodifikasi Adverb. Demikan juga dengan kita akan mengatakan seperti ini “the students showed a really amazing performance” or “the students showed a wonderfully ordinary performance” dan juga “my professor is really smart, tetapi tidak bisa jika “She ran real fast.”

Seperti adjectives, adverb dapat mempunyai bentuk comparative dan superlative untuk menunjukkan.

  • Move faster if you want to keep up with me.
  • The student who does the test fastest will finish first.

Kita sering menggunakan more dan most, less dan least untuk menunjukan tingkatan dengan adverbs:

  • With this shoes on, Amy could move more quickly among the others.
  • The flower was the most beautifully arranged creations I have ever seen.
  • Jimmy workedless confidently after his injury.
  • That is the least skillfully done performance I have seen in recent month.
  • She can run as fast as her brother.
  • Lately, Amy could not seem to be on time for anything.

Adverbs of Manner
He ran slowly and spoke quietly.

Adverbs of Place
